Once you have selected the perfect vinyl plank flooring for your home or business in Victoria, BC, it is time to install it. The good news is that, unless your existing floors are carpet or laminate, little to no preparation of the subfloor is required! You can always choose to have your old floor removed, of course, and we sometimes recommend a concrete floor coating between a foundation and vinyl planks to protect your new floor from damage from below.
If you choose to install a floating floor over your existing floor, only two steps are required before the planks can be cut and installed. First, vinyl planks need to be acclimated for at least 48 hours. This ensures that planks do not warp or expand and buckle after installation. Second, baseboards will need to be removed from the walls.
The next step is one of the most important - measuring the room to be sure that planks are installed straight and square (even if one of your walls is out of square!). To make your room look its best, we lay out your floor so that there is a plank right in the center of the room and the widths of the planks on each end of the room are as uniform as possible.
Once measurements and cuts are made, installing a floating floor is as simple as snapping the planks together in an aesthetically pleasing pattern (if multiple boxes of flooring are needed for a room, we recommend mixing the boxes before installation to ensure that dye lots are well blended). If you have chosen traditional luxury vinyl planks, adhesive will be required to secure the floor.
After all planks are in place, baseboards and transitions (if needed) can be reinstalled. If you have a floating vinyl floor, you can begin using it immediately! If adhesives were used, we recommend waiting at least 24 hours before walking on your new floor.
Your new vinyl flooring should last anywhere from 10 to 20 years with minimal maintenance. If you have any questions or concerns during this time, do not hesitate to reach out to us. And if you love your floor so much that you want to put vinyl in every room in your home, just give us a call!
If you have decided that vinyl flooring is the right choice for your space, you still have once more choice to make before you visit a flooring store in Victoria to browse the wide selection of colors and styles that are available. Vinyl flooring comes in two main types: traditional and polymer core.
Traditional luxury vinyl tile (often abbreviated LVT) offers all of the advantages of vinyl listed above except that, because it is flexible before it is installed, it must be glued to the subfloor. It is also the least expensive type of vinyl flooring, however - it can cost up to half as much as polymer core vinyl!
Though more expensive, polymer core vinyl flooring has a few extra advantages over traditional vinyl. In addition to its ability to be installed without adhesives, polymer core vinyl can help with sound deadening, can withstand greater temperature fluctuations, and can even be padded underneath for a slightly softer step. If you have room in your budget, we highly recommend opting for a polymer core vinyl!
